MCP Apps and AI Search: Two Different Ways to Be Discovered

AI search visibility and an MCP app solve different problems. A public website gives search systems information they can retrieve and cite. An MCP app lets a connected AI host call tools and, where supported, show an interactive interface. Connecting an app does not automatically make your website rank or earn a public app listing.

What should be discoverable on your website?

Publish a clear explanation of your product, who it helps, and the tasks it supports. Give each useful guide its own stable URL. Keep important answers in the page text, link related guides, and make sure crawlers can retrieve the content without signing in.

For Kernel Apps, the public topic is building MCP-connected apps for ChatGPT and Claude. The private pilot has demonstrated interactive service workflows in both hosts. Broader access is through the waitlist; a pilot result is not a promise that every workflow or public distribution path is ready.

What does an MCP connection provide?

An MCP server exposes tools and resources to a compatible host. A tool might list saved books, retrieve a task, or update a budget entry. MCP Apps can add an interactive UI in supporting hosts. Private records still require the right authenticated user and permissions.

The connection provides capabilities after installation and authorization. Search discovery concerns public information before that connection. Keep private customer records out of public guides, structured data, sitemaps, and machine-readable summaries.

What helps AI search understand a page?

Start with a direct answer, explain the boundaries, and link to authoritative references. Use descriptive headings and concrete examples. Keep titles, visible copy, and structured data consistent. Fix missing pages and incorrect canonical URLs before adding more content.

Google's guidance for AI features explains the relationship to normal search eligibility. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes its search crawler. Allowing retrieval makes discovery possible; it does not guarantee a citation, ranking, or recommendation.

A practical starting point

  • Make your public product explanation and useful guides accessible as HTML.
  • Link each guide from a relevant page and include its canonical URL in the sitemap.
  • Inspect actual indexing in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Keep the private app's identity and record permissions separate from public content.
  • Measure observed impressions and citations rather than assuming visibility from a configuration change.
